Why the Islamic date can differ between countries
The Islamic, or Hijri, calendar is a lunar calendar of twelve months. A month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, and it is 29 or 30 days long. Because the moon is sighted locally, or a country follows a calculated calendar instead, the same Gregorian day can be two different Hijri dates in two different places.
Saudi Arabia follows the Umm al-Qura calendar, which is calculated in advance and used for official purposes. Pakistan, India and Bangladesh usually wait for a local moon sighting, so their dates commonly trail Saudi Arabia by a day or two. Neither convention is a mistake: they answer different questions about when the month begins.
How to read a Hijri date
A Hijri date is written day, month, year, then the era: for example 19 Rabi' Al-Thani 1448 AH. AH stands for Anno Hegirae, counted from the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. A Hijri year is about eleven days shorter than a Gregorian year, so Ramadan, both Eids and every other Islamic date move earlier through the Gregorian calendar each year.
In the Islamic calendar a day runs from sunset to sunset. The new date begins at Maghrib, so after sunset the Hijri date is already the next day, even though the Gregorian date has not changed yet.
Islamic date today in Pakistan
The Islamic date today in Pakistan is 22 Rabi' Al-Thani 1448 AH. Pakistan follows the local moon sighting, so its date can be a day or two behind Saudi Arabia and the rest of the world.
Islamic date today in India and Bangladesh
The Islamic date today in India and Bangladesh is 24 Rabi' Al-Thani 1448 AH, following the same local moon sighting as Pakistan.
Islamic date today in Saudi Arabia and worldwide
The Islamic date today in Saudi Arabia and most of the world is 24 Rabi' Al-Thani 1448 AH, calculated with the Umm al-Qura calendar used for Saudi Arabia's official calendar.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the Islamic date different in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia?
The Hijri calendar is lunar, and a new month begins when the crescent moon is sighted. Saudi Arabia follows the Umm al-Qura calendar, while Pakistan, India and Bangladesh generally wait for a local sighting, so their dates can be one or two days apart. Neither is wrong; they follow different conventions.
How is the Islamic date calculated here?
The dates on this page come from the Umm al-Qura calendar, the calculated calendar used for the official Saudi calendar. Countries that follow a local moon sighting instead can be a day or two apart, which is why the by-country table above may show more than one date. A Hijri year is about 354 days, so the whole calendar moves roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year.
Does the Islamic date change at sunset?
In the Islamic calendar a new day begins at Maghrib (sunset), not at midnight. So after sunset the Hijri date is already the next day, while the Gregorian date has not changed yet.
What are the 12 months of the Islamic calendar?
The Hijri year has twelve months: Muharram, Safar, Rabi' Al-Awwal, Rabi' Al-Thani, Jumada Al-Awwal, Jumada Al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah. A Hijri year is about 354 days, so it moves roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year, which is why Ramadan and both Eids fall in different months or seasons over time.
When does Ramadan start?
The next Ramadan begins on 8 February 2027 (1 Ramadan 1448 AH) on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In Pakistan it is expected on 10 February 2027, following the local moon sighting.
When is the next Eid al-Fitr?
The next Eid al-Fitr is on 9 March 2027 (1 Shawwal 1448 AH), the day after Ramadan ends. In Pakistan it is expected on 11 March 2027, following the local moon sighting.
When is the next Eid al-Adha?
The next Eid al-Adha is on 16 May 2027 (10 Dhul Hijjah 1448 AH). In Pakistan it is expected on 18 May 2027, following the local moon sighting.
